Evaluation Question 4

"Who would be the audience for your media product?"

What type of job do they do?

Many of my target audience will be students at University or College, this means they will not have a full time job. Some of them may have a part time job either in retail, a bar/club, a gym or work for the university they are studying at.

As for my audience that is not a student they will either be in an apprentice anything ranging from fashion to IT to engineering. Some of my audience may be in full time employment either working in an office, a gym, a bar or a clothes store.

How do they dress?

Where do they shop?  They wear the latest fashions and buy their clothes from the high street and online shops too such as Topshop, Urban Outfitters, American Apparel and Zara for girls/women. For men they would most likely shop in Urban Outfitters, Size and Street Wear designers. They are mostly into the latest trainers from shops such as Offspring; wearing trainers mainly made by Adidas, Nike and Converse. Sometimes if they have extra money or if they get a student loan they may treat themselves to a designer pair of shoes, bag or jewellery.

What type of house/ flat do they live in?

The students of my target audience will either live at home if they are studying in the city they come from. Many students tend to move away for Uni so they will be living in student accommodation or be renting a house with other students they have made friends with.

The rest of my target audience with still be living with their parents or renting an apartment/small house. Very few if not any of my audience will own their own property as it is very expensive these days and they will be own fairly low incomes. Nearly all of my audience will eventually want to own their own house.

What do they value in life?

My target audience value their family and friends. They have a strong aspirations and ambitions in life as many of them are studying for a degree to help them get a well-paid job. They also have a strong interest in music and my target audience value music as being important in their lives.

Where do they go when they socialise? What types of things do they spend their money on? How do they spend their free time?

My audience will include college/sixth form students, university students and young working adults. They spend the majority of their time studying and working during the day. In the evenings or weekends; they may go to the gym as young people are infatuated by the way they look these days, enjoy eating out or having a take-away, and at the weekend most young people go out to bars and clubs where they listen to music and consume alcohol. Some of my audience won't be into clubbing and will prefer going to see live music acts and be a 'festival go-er'.

They will also spend a proportion of their money on shopping and if they're a girl - cosmetics and maintenance such as having their hair/nails done. If they have spare cash they will tend to try and save for festival tickets or a summer holiday.

What car do they drive or aspire to drive?

They will want to be able to own an expensive car and a large house when they are older. Most of my audience will not drive at the moment as they are predominately students who can't afford to or who don't have the need to. However, those that do drive with jobs usually have cars like Ford Fiestas/Focus, Vauxhall

Corsas and even Mini Coopers. These cars will not be brand new as my target audience will not be able to afford a brand new car, they will probably be a few years old. Clothes wise most of them will want to be able to more expensive designer clothes and accessories that they see their favourite music artists wearing. Such as 'Tom Ford' as Jay-Z & many other R'n'B artists mention this designers in their songs.

What phone do they own?

They will aspire to own the latest technology such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. Most of my audience will have iPhone's/Samsung's so they can keep up to date with social networks. Many of the student audience or young professionals will have Apple Macbooks or the equivalent so they can produce high quality of work and keep up to date with music etc.

How do they listen to music?

Many of my audience will have smart phones where they will listen to music on the go, however those who have a large number of songs may have iPods to store excess music. Some of my audience may still listen to CD's but the majority will buy songs off iTunes or have spotify or listen to music artists on sound cloud.

Will it be for a mainstream or niche audience?

My music magazine is aimed at a very wide audience of the younger generation. It contains mainstream music that is popular with most people, with a hint of slightly less commercialised music too. I have chosen to go with a mainstream audience as I think more people will read it and no one will feel like they can't relate to it. Also this will generate more sales and the magazine will appeal to a diverse audience.

Who will the core reader of your magazine be? What artists do they like?

In my magazine there isn't going to be a definitive 'core' reader as I want my audience to be diverse as possible. They will like popular artists of the time, mainly coming from the 'Hip-Hop' and 'R'n'B' genres, such as; Drake, Jay-z, Rihanna, The Weeknd, Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean etc.

Who will be your primary and secondary audience?

My primary audience is going to be the 'core reader' which will be students and young working adults. This means they are not going to have a very high disposable income and the majority may not even have jobs due to their studies. This is why I have priced my magazine at £2.99 which is quite a low price for a music magazine so this will attract my target audience.

The secondary audience of my magazine is much broader and widespread. Anyone may read the magazine including teachers, brothers, sisters, friends, colleague; anyone who is up to the age of around 30 years old will read this magazine.

What will their age ranges be? What will be the gender mix?

There age range will be predominately from 16-24 year olds, but teenagers a couple of years younger may also be interested in the magazine. Also there may be adults up to 30 who will enjoy reading this magazine and may appeal to them.

Both male and females will read this magazine as it will appeal to both. I have ensured that my colour scheme looks unisex so it doesn't put either of them off buying it, also I have made sure that I have featured artists and bands that appeal strongly to both the male and female audience. Also articles not music-related will appeal to both genders such as 'Money Saving Tips Whilst at University'.

What will be the socio-economic mix?

I have used the JICNAR scale to help me decide what my target audience will be like in terms of profession. My primary audience will mostly come from Group E as the majority of them will be students. The rest of my core audience will come from of the other groups C1C2D, with an exception of AB as they are fairly young and unlikely have a high up job such as a profession/managerial because they wouldn't have enough experience. Also they are more likely to come from those groups and group E as it will fit in with there earnings and lifestyle due to the price and content of the magazine.

I know this because I have carried out detailed and textual research and analysis of existing music magazines already out there and looked a Media Press Packs of famous music magazines such a 'Q' and 'NME'. I have also used the 'National Readership Survey' website to help me further in finding out different demographics of my potential audience. These demographics include:
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Ethnicity
  • Class and status
  • Languages spoken
  • Disabilities
  • Mobility
  • Home ownership
  • Employment status
  • Location
